Refrigerator Contest Picks Whirlpool, Frigidaire: Whirlpool Corp. and Frigidaire Co. have been chosen as finalists in a contest to see who can best build an energy-efficient refrigerator that is also friendly to the Earth’s ozone layer. The Super-Efficient Refrigerator Program is sponsored by a group of electric utilities and offers a grand prize of $30 million in cash. The winner will be announced in July and the new appliance will be available to the public by as early as 1994, contest sponsors said.
