Monterey Park : Girls’ Self-Esteem Program
The Monterey Park Boys’ and Girls’ Club has started a 10-week program on self-esteem for Latino, Asian-American and African-American girls.
The Los Angeles Women’s Foundation recently awarded a $2,950 grant for the program, called Choices, which includes discussions on issues such as teen pregnancy, poverty, drug abuse and AIDS. Two police officers and a volunteer lead discussions and take the girls on field trips.
Choices is free for girls in grades six to nine. Enrollment is continuous. For more information, call Choices director Cathy Hamano at (818) 573-2831.
