HUNTINGTON BEACH : City to Flush Out Its Water System

Share

City workers have embarked on a three-month program to flush water mains throughout the city.

The flushing is required for maintenance of the water system and is conducted to ensure a high standard of water quality, water officials said.

Officials acknowledged that residents may be concerned over what appears to be a large amount of water flowing from city hydrants during the flushing operation, but the total used in the cleaning process is equivalent to less than two hours’ average daily use in the city, officials said.

Customers normally use about 31 million gallons of water each day, while the flushing operations will require nearly 2 million gallons, officials said.

“We understand that residents may question the wisdom of system-flushing when water supplies are low,” said Jeffrey Renna, water operations manager, “but this flushing is necessary to ensure that the water we do have remains of the highest quality.”

Residents may experience some discoloration in their fresh water because of the flushing, Renna said. But the condition should be temporary and not harmful, he said.

If the discoloration persists, call (714) 536-5921.
