from Times Staff and Wire Reports

Two previously unknown earthquake faults have been discovered under San Francisco Bay by U.S. Geological Survey scientists. USGS geologists Gary Mann and Mike Marlow told colleagues at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco that the data is too new to help in assessing how the faults affect Bay Area earthquake sequences. The Hunters Point Fault runs into the bay from a former Navy shipyard in the southeast corner of the city. The Coyote Point Fault lies under San Francisco International Airport.
