HUNTINGTON BEACH : Green Appointed to Bay Delta Panel
Gov. Pete Wilson this week appointed former Councilman Peter M. Green to the Bay Delta Oversight Council. The 22-member group is seeking long-term solutions to environmental problems affecting San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin river delta.
The council will study conditions for about three years and make recommendations to the governor, Green said.
He said conditions in the delta represent “one of the most serious environmental problems that California faces.”
The shortage of rain and snowfall, combined with competing demands for fresh water, has caused water levels to drop, Green said. This increases the chance that salt water will invade the delta, which would hurt agriculture and wildlife.
Green, 66, was regarded as an environmentalist during his two-term stint on the City Council, which began in 1984. He served as mayor in 1990.
He is a professor of ecology at Golden West College. In October, he received the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Award from President Bush in ceremonies at the White House. He was honored for his work to restore the Bolsa Chica wetlands.
