Salvage teams said Friday that they had started removing oil remaining in the Greek tanker Aegean Sea, which ran aground on the northwest Spanish coast last week, emptying much of its load into the sea.

Salvage workers in La Coruna said the operation could recover 50 tons of crude an hour. Initially they were working on only the tanks in the stern. Those in the bow are underwater and, if they have oil left in them, will be difficult to drain.
