Not only did the New Jersey Devils beat the team with the most points in the NHL, they did it with fewer players on the ice.

Alexander Semak scored his first NHL shorthanded goal midway through the second period to give the New Jersey Devils a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins Friday at East Rutherford, N.J.

It was only the third victory by the Devils in their last 10 games at the Meadowlands, and their first in four meetings with the Penguins this season.

The loss ended Pittsburgh’s two-game winning streak, although the Penguins remain on top of the Patrick Division with 43 points. Despite having league’s best power play, the Penguins were held scoreless in seven such opportunities.

Chris Terreri made 31 saves to record his third victory in his last nine appearances. Terreri preserved the victory with final-second saves against Jaromir Jagr and Larry Murphy.

Calgary 6, Toronto 3--The smallest player on the ice played big for the Flames as Theoren Fleury, 5 feet 6, scored two goals, one on a penalty shot, at Toronto. After Fleury became the first opponent to score on a penalty shot at Maple Leaf Gardens in nearly eight years early in the second period, Gary Sutter scored the winner with 57 seconds left in the same period.

Washington 8, Winnipeg 6--Dimitri Khristich and Michal Pivonka scored two goals each at Landover, Md., as the Capitals earned their sixth consecutive victory. Peter Bondra tied his career high with five assists for the Capitals, who have won eight of their last nine games.

Buffalo 9, Hartford 3--Pat LaFontaine and Alexander Mogilny each scored two power-play goals at Buffalo as the Sabres won a second consecutive game after a four-game winless streak.

The Whalers managed only 14 shots on goalie Daren Puppa, but the Sabres took 46 shots at goalies Sean Burke and Corrie D’Alessio.

N.Y. Rangers 5, Tampa Bay 4--Steven King, a rookie, scored his second consecutive game-winning goal against the Lightning, this time at Tampa Bay.

King beat goaltender J.C. Bergeron at 3:55 of the third period for the game winner, two nights after scoring the winning goal in New York’s 6-5 victory against the Lightning at Miami.

It was the 11th loss in 12 games for the Lightning.

Detroit 4, Philadelphia 2--Dino Ciccarelli scored two second-period goals at Detroit, leading the Red Wings to their second victory in nine games.

Detroit played without center Jimmy Carson, who was involved in a minor auto accident Friday morning. He escaped serious injury, but sat out the game on doctor’s advice. The Flyers were once again missing Eric Lindros, who is expected to return from his knee injury early next week.
