Edison figures to start slowly after graduating a championship team that included two-time league MVP, Brandon Jessie, who is now starting at Ventura College. The Chargers have only one returning starter, Murphy at center, and eight juniors are expected to fill five of the top eight positions on the team. What’s more, Murphy has missed two tournaments because of football recruiting trips. “We’ve been erratic, which is to be expected,” Borchert said. “Kyle’s not a great player, but he’s a great team player,” Borchert said. “When he’s on the court, everyone else plays better. We missed his leadership qualities.” Beard, the seventh man on the varsity last season as a sophomore, and Kroeger, a starter on the junior varsity last year, have been the most consistent players. Kroeger is averaging 15.8 points and Beard 12 points. “This is a very young team, and consequently, we’ve had some inconsistent play,” Borchert said. “Scoring isn’t a problem, it’s defense, rebounding and playing together as a team. But I think we’re a little ahead of where I thought we would be at this point. I think we’ll be a good team by the end of January.” Borchert said he giggled when he saw Ocean View coaches scouting his first game.
