Small Plane Crashes Into Ocean; 1 Killed
A U.S. Coast Guard search team recovered an unidentified body from the wreckage of a small private plane that crashed into the ocean Monday about three miles off Camp Pendleton, officials said.
A Coast Guard cutter was dispatched after a U.S. Marine helicopter from Camp Pendleton reported seeing an explosion in the area about 4:30 p.m., said Petty Officer William Atkinson, a Coast Guard spokesman. The body was recovered about 5:35 p.m.
The plane was identified only as a Piper, and neither its destination nor its point of origin was immediately determined, Atkinson said.
