‘Cheers’ for Respect

Share

Two years after NBC’s “Cheers” came on the air, I got my first job in the restaurant business. I remember people saying “a weekly show about a bunch of people in a bar would never last” (“The Last Hurrah for NBC’s ‘Cheers,’ ” Dec. 9).

Well, the cast and writers of “Cheers” proved everyone wrong. It is the story line of how “real” people live that made “Cheers” what it was and is today.

I’m still in the restaurant business, but I’ve learned through the years that working in a bar is not looked upon highly in society. Too many times customers will be condescending or rude. I feel this must change.

Waiters and waitresses are not just bodies in uniforms ready to serve; we also have interesting lives. To have a show like “Cheers” to come home to made my life a lot easier. I will miss the series.
