COLLEGE BASKETBALL / NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Memphis State Edges Jackson State, 81-78

Anfernee Hardaway scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Memphis State past visiting Jackson State, 81-78, Friday night.

Memphis State (2-3) led by 10 points with 58 seconds left and held off a last-minute flurry from Jackson State (2-4). Jackson State’s John Taylor missed a shot from just inside midcourt as time expired.

Jackson State’s Lindsey Hunter led his team’s comeback in the final five minutes. Hunter finished with a game-high 30 points, including 19 of his team’s final 23 points.

In the final minute alone, Hunter hit three three-pointers, the final one coming with 15 seconds left to cut the Memphis State lead to 79-78. But Memphis State’s Marcus Nolan made two free throws with three seconds left to preserve the victory.

Hardaway had a poor shooting night, making only seven of 21 shots. He converted 13 of 16 free throws.

Guard Billy Smith added 22 points for Memphis State and Kelvin Allen had 15 points and 17 rebounds.

OTHER GAMES

Keith Balzer had game highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds as host San Diego State defeated North Florida, 90-79, in the opening round of the Texaco Star Classic tournament. Berry Randle came off the bench to record 15 of his 19 points in the second half to help the Aztecs (3-3) pull away against the Ospreys (2-4), a Division II opponent. The Aztecs surpassed their victory total from last year, when they went 2-26, but they have yet to beat a Division I team this season. In the second game, Eddie Hill scored 29 points as Washington State rolled over Azusa Pacific, 94-71. . . . Askia Jones scored 19 points and helped Kansas State withstand Missouri Kansas City’s second-half rally as the Wildcats defeated the Kangaroos, 66-64. Kansas State improved to 5-0. Missouri Kansas City, which has never beaten a Big Eight team, fell to 2-4. The Kangaroos’ Tony Dumas, the nation’s 15th-leading scorer, finished with 19 points, his 46th consecutive game with at least 10 points. . . . Billy McCaffrey, who transferred from Duke after the Blue Devils’ 1991 NCAA championship, scored 17 points as Vanderbilt (7-1) defeated North Carolina A&T;, 87-51, in the first round of the Acme Boot Showdown. Jamine Williams lead North Caroline A&T; (2-3) with 23 points. . . . Brian Grant scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Xavier of Ohio defeated Delaware, 74-66, in the NCAA Ball tournament in Tokyo for its fifth consecutive victory. . . . Wesley Person scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Auburn (3-1) to a 65-45 victory over cold-shooting Louisiana Tech (1-4) in the East Coast Classic in Wilmington, N.C. Louisiana Tech made eight of 33 shots in the first half, while Auburn was 10 of 21 and took a 27-20 halftime lead.

Tom Kleinschmidt scored 24 points and DePaul (4-2) used a 14-4 run in the second half in beating Northeastern Illinois, 90-83. Reggie Smith scored 33 points to lead Northeastern Illinois (1-4). DePaul could have been looking ahead to playing No. 1 Duke on Monday in the Maui Invitational. The Blue Demons trailed the Golden Eagles (1-4) for most of the first half before taking a 41-37 lead at halftime. . . . Nick Sanderson scored 20 points to lead Brigham Young to an 89-65 victory over Utah State. BYU (5-1) of the Western Athletic Conference led, 65-55, after Jay Goodman’s three-point basket for Utah State with 7:18 left in the game. Goodman, who finished with 24 points, had pulled Utah State (1-4) of the Big West to within 52-43 with another three-pointer with 15:01 left in the game.
