Willy Merrick’s first collegiate field goal, a 22-yarder with 10 seconds to play, gave Marshall a 31-28 victory over Youngstown State in the NCAA I-AA championship game at Huntington, W. Va.
Merrick, recruited on a soccer scholarship, normally watches his sophomore brother, David Merrick, handle the kicking duties. But David was suspended for the championship game because he skipped practice Thursday.
