VENTURA : Holiday Sobriety Checks to Continue

Share

With the holidays approaching, the Ventura Police Department plans to continue operating sobriety checkpoints every weekend through New Year’s Day, police said Monday.

Last weekend, Ventura police conducted three checkpoints in the city and made two arrests, said Ventura Police Sgt. George Morris.

Both suspects were charged and released, police said.

Saturday’s checkpoints ran from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., during which time police contacted 351 drivers. In addition to the two arrests, 10 drivers were stopped for suspicion of driving under the influence but were released, police said.

Ventura police plan on operating checkpoints every weekend during December, designated “Three-D Month” by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, Morris said.

“Three-D” stands for drugs, drinking and driving, and officials hope to alert drivers to the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, he said.

“December has the highest drunk-driving related fatalities for any month of the year,” Morris said.
