Faulty MD-11 Floorboards Replaced: A production mistake at a General Dynamics Convair plant has forced workers to replace floorboards in up to 70 McDonnell Douglas MD-11 jetliners, including about 50 that already are flying. Although it’s a costly setback for McDonnell Douglas as well as Convair, both companies say the mix-up does not pose a safety hazard in the wide-body passenger jets. The problem, discovered by McDonnell Douglas earlier this month, resulted when Convair employees used a sealant instead of a stronger adhesive as required for floorboards. San Diego-based Convair, which likely will foot the bill for correcting the mistake, builds fuselages for the MD-11.
