Q: What do 2,360 feet, lots of brass and singing dishes have in common?

A: The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Bandfest on Wednesday.

OK, the feet and brass make sense. They’re the five bands that will be playing. But singing dishes? Sounds like something from Disneyland.

You are close. According to Bandfest chairman Key Lawson the bands will play--for the finale--”Be Our Guest” from the Disney film “Beauty and the Beast,” in which the flatware did quite a number.

Lawson said that Tournament of Roses bands cannot do any maneuvers in the big parade, which must keep moving so that everyone can get on TV. “The Bandfest then gives bands 15 to 20 minutes for a full field performance,” he said.

Only about half of the parade bands usually want to participate, Lawson said. The tournament’s music committee then chooses

Bandfest groups based on a variety of factors. “It’s either a size issue or color issue,” said Lawson. “Some of them also have better field shows than others.”

The Tournament of Roses Pasadena City College Honor Band, a composite group of PCC and local high school students directed by James Arnwine, is the only perennial participant.

This year’s other bands are Arcadia High School’s Apache Marching Band; the Marching Tiger Band of Ohio’s Pickerington High School; Sprayberry High School’s Band of Gold from Marietta, Georgia, and the Marching Koalas, a composite band of high school students from the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia.

Horrell Field, at Pasadena City College, 1570 E. Colorado Blvd., will open at noon, with the Bandfest starting at 1 p.m. Admission is $5; children younger than 3 can attend free.
