Am I Covered?

With State Farm and other auto insurers eliminating automatic coverage in many states when policyholders rent cars for business purposes, it’s important to know when you’re covered and how well.

Examine your policy. If you’re not covered, shop around, because more than half of all auto policies still include such coverage.

Don’t assume that coverage under a credit card program is airtight. Such insurance may be limited, so make sure you understand the terms.

You may be covered by your employer. Many companies, especially large ones, cover accidents involving employees on business trips.

Rental car companies sell “collision damage waivers” for $8 to $13 per day. They are overpriced compared to ordinary insurance but may be worth buying if you know you have no other coverage.
