MISSION VIEJO : $1.37-Million Bid for Soccer Complex OKd

A $1.37-million bid for construction of the final phase of a soccer complex to be used by the United States World Cup soccer team has been approved by the City Council.

The winning offer by Coast Landscape Construction Co. to build the soccer facility in Oso Viejo Community Park was almost $200,000 less than the next lowest bid submitted by Valley Crest Landscape Inc.

The base bid covers construction of two parking lots, an access road, modification of a traffic signal and a locker room-training facility. The park is located off Oso Viejo Road near La Paz Road and Marguerite Parkway.

“This has been a very expensive park to develop,” said Councilwoman Sharon Cody. “Because it’s a low section of the park, we’ve had to do things like change the way traffic is circulated to its parking lots to get people in and out of there.”

When completed, the soccer complex will be used by the United States World Cup soccer team to train for the World Cup tournament to be held in the United States in 1994.

Members of the national team will be living in Mission Viejo. The squad is expected to hold scrimmages against teams from other countries starting next year.
