Pantsuits Stride Back In : Fabrics are geared toward versatile occasions.

Whether the pantsuit depicts elegant simplicity or intelligent investment dressing, one thing is certain: The functional--and sometimes basic--1970s trend has been reinterpreted into dashing fashion statements for the ‘90s.

Women of all ages and sizes are sporting the nostalgic, two-piece garment.

Silhouettes range from feminine, double-breasted cutaway jackets with peak lapels worn over softly pleated trousers to fitted, three-button jackets paired with wide-legged pants. Funkier versions show up as boxy, collarless tunics with hidden plackets worn with oversized slacks.

Detailing is also prevalent. Look for appliqued lace collars, metal hardware adorning pockets and lapels, top-stitching, pearlized buttons and cuffed pant ankles.

Fabrics too are geared toward versatile occasions. They include combinations of rayon/crepe, polyester/rayon, wool/rayon, as well as gabardine, silk crepe de Chine and crushed rayon.

Pantsuits are offered at most major department stores.
