WEEKEND TV : More Football Kicks Off the New Year

The networks kick off the first weekend of the New Year with schedule changes, a Hollywood special and pro football playoffs.

CBS makes an adjustment in its Saturday-night lineup when Jane Seymour stars in the new series, “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” at 8 p.m.; “Raven,” a mid-season replacement from last year, returns at 9 p.m., and the police drama, “The Hat Squad,” moves from Wednesday nights to 10 p.m. (Channels 2 and 8).

NBC counters with the special “Dame Edna’s Hollywood,” which features interviews with Burt Reynolds, Sean Young, Barry Manilow, Doc Severinsen, Cesar Romero and Robin Leach at 10 p.m. on Channels (4),(36) and (39).

And the National Football League opens its Super Bowl tournament with AFC and NFC Wild Card games today and Sunday.

At 9:30 a.m. today, the Washington Redskins play the Minnesota Vikings and at 1 p.m., the Kansas City Chiefs meet the San Diego Chargers. Both games will be carried by ABC (Channels 7, 3, 10, and 42).

On Sunday, the Houston Oilers play the Buffalo Bills on NBC at 9:30 a.m. (4)(36)(39), and the Philadelphia Eagles battle the New Orleans Saints on CBS at 1 p.m. (2)(8).

PBS will carry a discussion Sunday night about the future of education on “A Conversation With the Former Secretaries of Education 1992.” The forum will be moderated by “MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour” correspondent Charlayne Hunter-Gault at 11 p.m. on KCET Channel 28.

Several public affairs shows will highlight President Bush’s pardons, a look back at 1992 and a look forward to 1993.
