OXNARD : Panel on Serving the Disabled to Meet

Share

In an effort to better serve disabled residents, Oxnard officials have scheduled the first meeting of an advisory committee aimed at improving access to public facilities.

The public is invited to the meeting, which will start at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Oxnard Public Library, 251 S. A St.

“We recognize that the experts on accessibility for the disabled are the persons with disabilities themselves,” housing Director Sal Gonzales said.

The advisory committee was created as part of the city’s compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act, a federal mandate that outlaws discrimination against people with disabilities.

Under terms of the law, all public agencies and private businesses with 25 or more employees are required to make “reasonable accommodations” for employees and customers with physical, mental or learning disabilities.

At Oxnard City Hall, the heads of the city’s 16 departments helped draft a plan to make facilities more accessible to the disabled.

Sign-language and Spanish-language interpreters will be provided at Tuesday’s meeting.
