CONCORD — A single-engine plane was forced to crash-land Saturday on the side of the highway near Buchanan Airport, officials said.
Richard Talley, a Mill Valley resident, radioed the airport and said his Piper Arrow III had engine failure at 11,000 feet. Talley, who was flying solo from Novato to Ontario, escaped injury.
He said his last words to the control tower at the airport were, “I’m dead.”
But Talley was able to land the plane along the westbound shoulder of California 4. No one on the ground was injured.
Concord police said the accident, reported about 2 p.m., snarled traffic along the highway, but the road remained open and traffic was moving smoothly by 3:30.
