Don’t Let Kids’ Selfishness Sink In

Share

I sympathize with the feelings of the writer who felt neglected by her yuppie daughter at Christmas. Her friends also expressed anger and sadness at the thoughtlessness of their adult children. I have been in the same situation and my children are only just out of their teens. However, I can offer a helpful piece of advice.

Anyone who expects other people to make her happy is setting herself up for disappointment. We are responsible for our own happiness and we can choose to ignore a depressing personal situation and create a better one.

If our own children don’t appreciate any efforts we make to celebrate the season, there are hundreds of volunteer organizations where our caring instincts and varied talents will be greatly appreciated, not to mention lonely neighbors, new mothers and other needy people who could use some help and support.
