Election Scheduled March 2 to Fill Royce State Senate Seat

Share

Gov. Pete Wilson announced Monday that a special election will be held in Orange County on March 2 to fill a state Senate seat representing Santa Ana, Garden Grove and Fullerton.

The opening was created in November when state Sen. Ed Royce (R-Anaheim) was elected to Congress. Royce is to be sworn in to the House of Representatives today.

The special election is an open ballot, meaning that voters can cross party lines to choose a candidate. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, a runoff between the top vote-getters in each party will be held on April 27.

So far, few people have announced plans to run. Two conservative Republicans are among the best known: Brian Bennett, a former aide to Rep. Robert K. Dornan (R-Garden Grove), and Rob Hurtt, a wealthy GOP contributor.

Democrat Ken LeBlanc, who lost an Assembly bid last November, has also indicated that he will run.
