A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

CITY COUNCIL

COUNCIL MEETINGS: Councilman Michael Woo introduced a proposal that would revise the council’s meeting schedule in order to attract more citizen attendance. Woo is asking that the council, which meets three times a week during the daytime, hold one evening meeting each week. He also proposes that one-third of council meetings take place in the San Fernando Valley.

WILSHIRE CENTER: Councilman Nate Holden has proposed that the area in his 10th District bounded by 6th Street on the north, Hoover Street on the east, 8th Street on the south and Wilton Place on the west be designated Wilshire Center. If approved, signs will be put up to identify the area.

HOW THEY VOTED

How Westside representatives voted on selected issues.

PLAYA VISTA PROJECT: Approved a proposal to continue the staffing and funding for the city’s review of the vast Playa Vista residential and commercial project, a multibillion-dollar development planned for the open land between Marina del Rey and the Westchester Bluffs. The approval allows the Planning Department to continue to prepare and process environmental documents for the project. Passed 13-0.

VOTING YES: Marvin Braude, John Ferraro, Ruth Galanter, Nate Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Michael Woo and Zev Yaroslavsky.

LIBRARY: Approved spending $300,000 to continue to employ 66 city library employees whose salaries were previously funded through a state grant that has been cut back. Passed: 13-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Ferraro, Galanter, Holden, Ridley-Thomas, Woo and Yaroslavsky.

DEMOLITION TRUCK: Approved spending $49,500 to buy a truck crane that is being leased. The vehicle is used to demolish buildings that are in danger of collapsing into the public way. Passed: 14-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Ferraro, Galanter, Holden, Ridley-Thomas, Woo and Yaroslavsky.
