CAMARILLO : Staff of Park District to Be Reduced Again

To cope with state funding cuts, Camarillo’s Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District will lay off its assistant general manager and up to eight other employees, parks officials said Thursday.

The district board approved the layoffs at its meeting Wednesday, said Eldred Lokker, the district’s general manager. The board also decided not to fill two positions that are already vacant, he said.

State funding cuts reduced the park district’s revenues by $365,000 in the 1993 fiscal year, Lokker said.

Four of the positions will be terminated July 1, including the job of assistant general manager, which commands a salary of more than $50,000, he said. A full-time public relations coordinator, a part-time secretary and a part-time pool maintenance worker will also lose their jobs.

And if necessary, four full-time maintenance workers will be laid off to make up for possible state funding cuts this year, Lokker said.

The district has 37 full-time and about 75 part-time employees, Lokker said.

Since state and county cuts budget cuts were made last year, the district has eliminated 10 to 20 part-time positions and reduced parks maintenance, he said.

The district will also save money by keeping Freedom Pool closed this summer, Lokker said. The pool, at Freedom Park near Camarillo Airport, is normally open during the summer.
