A Long Beach gang member was sentenced Thursday to 29-years-to-life in prison for shooting a 12-year-old to death as she begged for her life in the middle of the street.

Guillermo Zolozabel, 19, could either be paroled in less than 15 years or spend the rest of his life in prison under the “indeterminate” sentence imposed by Pomona Superior Court Judge Clarence Stromwell.

Zolozabel was convicted June 5 of the 1991 murder of Anita Rochelle Briones.

Family members said Anita went with her 16-year-old sister, Felicia, to a bridal shower the night before, then left to do some shopping. When she returned, she found that Felicia had gotten into an altercation with members of a Long Beach gang, police said.

After the fight, Felicia left with friends, but Anita waited there until 3:45 a.m., worried about her mother’s reaction if she went home without her older sister. Members of the eastside gang drove up and asked Anita where the original group had gone. Zolozabel, armed with a shotgun, shot her.
