Liquidation Sale Begins: So many bargain hunters jammed Shipley’s Family Clothing store in Huntington Beach for the first day of its going-out-of-business sale Friday that security guards had to staff the entrances to make sure the store did not become too crowded, officials said. Manager Ray Ross said some shoppers had to wait 90 minutes before enough people had left the store before they could enter. Buyers had to wait up to three hours in line at the cash register. But with the store’s brand name merchandise marked 50% to 80% off and no item over $20, shoppers apparently thought the wait worthwhile. Shipley’s announced this week that it is closing its 10-store chain because Levi Strauss & Co. has decided to stop its shipments. The chain depends on Levi’s merchandise for 40% of its sales.
