Two men armed with handguns commandeered a United Parcel Service truck Monday evening, holding the driver for more than three hours before releasing him unharmed, police said.

The UPS driver, whom police declined to identify, was dropped off in Compton at about 8:50 p.m. Minutes later, police recovered the truck several blocks away, said Lt. Harold Shaffroth of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident began when the two men, driving a green 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass stolen in Paramount Jan. 4, rammed the truck on Jeronimo Road near Thrush Street at about 5:20 p.m., apparently staging an accident, Shaffroth said.

When the UPS driver got out of his truck to meet the men, they forced him back into the vehicle at gunpoint and drove off with him, leaving their car parked in the street, Shaffroth said.

They dropped the driver off in Compton and fled in the truck, only to abandon it several blocks away.

The two were described as black males. One of the suspects, said to be in his 20s with curly, neck-length hair, was wearing a print sport shirt. The other was described only as stocky.
