LOS ANGELES : LAPD Gets OK to Use Pepper-Based Spray
The Los Angeles Police Department received City Council approval Tuesday to equip all its officers with a pepper-based spray to replace the tear gas now being used.
The spray, which causes inflammation of the eyes and nose, breathing difficulties and a burning sensation on the skin for about half an hour, is more effective at temporarily debilitating hostile suspects than the current chemical sprays, according to LAPD officials.
Already used by the FBI and law enforcement officials in 49 states, the canisters full of cayenne pepper are being considered for use statewide by California’s Department of Health.
The city’s $200,000 pilot project, which will last three months, will be funded by transferring money between police department accounts. City officials said the spray will probably cut police brutality claims by reducing officers’ use of batons.
