BREA : Schools Cede Areas to Adjoining District

The Brea-Olinda School District Board of Education has agreed to transfer jurisdiction over certain undeveloped land to the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District to conform to existing city boundaries.

All properties on the east end of the Brea-Olinda district, which are in Yorba Linda’s sphere of influence, and pockets of land next to the Imperial Golf Course, were ceded to the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District, Garry Goff, Brea-Olinda assistant superintendent, said.

Goff said no students will be affected by the transfer. There are plans, however, to build as many as 3,000 homes during the next 10 years within the Yorba Linda sphere of influence.

“There’s no monetary value in the transfer,” Goff said. “However, we’re getting the freedom not to go way out of our local area to provide schools and transportation that could be very costly in the early years.”

Goff said that by aligning the school district’s boundaries with the city’s, officials are making sure that Brea students go to Brea schools and Placentia and Yorba Linda students go to schools in the Placentia-Yorba Linda school district.

The transfer has already been approved by the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District. The plan will go before the Orange County Board of Education for final approval.
