Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Girl Missing 16 Days Is Found in Bunker

A 10-year-old girl missing for 16 days was found in good condition in an elaborate underground bunker at the Bay Shore, N.Y., home of a family friend who had reported her disappearance. John Esposito, 43, faces a kidnaping charge. The hiding place--outfitted with a bed, toilet and cable television, as well as a chain--was concealed so well that police posted around the clock in the man’s house suspected nothing, authorities said. Katie Beers had been held against her will, sometimes chained by the neck, for the entire 16 days in the tiny room, police said.
