Share

Student artists from nine area high schools who created political graphics now on exhibit in Venice will be honored at a reception Friday at the SPARC gallery, 685 Venice Blvd., from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

The exhibit, titled “Celebrate Diversity: an Exhibit of Post-Riot Serigraphs,” grew out of a Saturday series of commercial art classes at Venice High School. Silk-screened T-shirts based on images inspired by the riots will also be for sale.

The students, directed by art teachers Marco Elliott and Joann Carrabbio and supported by a grant from the city’s L.A. Arts Recovery Fund, addressed such issues as gangs, human rights, prejudice, education cutbacks, police brutality and joblessness. They were drawn from Hamilton, Westchester, Fairfax, University, Jordan, Crenshaw, Manual Arts, Venice and Verdugo Hills high schools.
