FULLERTON : Church to Celebrate 100th Anniversary

The congregation of First Baptist Church of Fullerton, one of the city’s oldest churches, will celebrate its 100th anniversary Sunday.

Pastor W. Lowell Fairley said he sees that as an occasion to look to the future, rather than rest on past achievements.

Fairley said he plans to quote the prophet Isaiah to his congregation at the 10:30 a.m. service: “Do not keep in mind former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing. Now it shall spring forth. Will you not take note of it?”

There will be a lunch at 12:30 p.m. to honor two former senior pastors--. Emory Campbell, who led the church for 25 years, and Samuel Hochstatter, who was pastor from 1982 to 1991.

Fairley said about 800 people worship at the church. “The attitude and spirit of the people is extremely high,” he said.

He became pastor last September but has been a member of the church for 14 years.

The local congregation was founded in 1893, when it bought a Presbyterian Church near the corner of Wilshire and Pomona avenues for $1,000.

The current complex of church, gym and administration buildings at 212 E. Wilshire Ave. opened in 1961.
