NEW RELEASES / JAZZ : In Brief

Share

**1/2, Glenn Horiuchi, “Oxnard Beet,” Soul Note. Pianist Horiuchi’s first album for a prominent jazz label offers many low-key pleasures but could stand more fire. Horiuchi has seamlessly blended Japanese elements with a wide assortment of jazz styles on these seven well-conceived and well-performed originals. The quartet’s sound is enjoyably economical, but only Leon Alexander’s drumming, more punchy backbeat than swinging pulse, really challenges and prods Horiuchi’s adroit playing.
