A man targeted for prosecution in the slaying of a Roman Catholic priest pleaded guilty and accepted a 40-year sentence rather than stand trial.

Assistant Atty. Gen. Mike Nassios said he approved a plea bargain for Robert Kenneth Daniels, 33, because of questions about the admissibility of a confession he allegedly made to a church leader.

Daniels was charged with first-degree murder and felony murder in the 1990 killing of the Rev. Mario Robert Ross. On Friday he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated robbery.
