South Africa and Nigeria played to a scoreless tie in a World Cup qualifying match at Johannesburg, diminishing South Africa’s chances of playing in the 1994 competition in the United States.

South Africa, barred from world soccer for 16 years because of its policy of apartheid, is trying for its first appearance in the World Cup. To earn a berth, South Africa must defeat Congo later this month and hope for a Congo victory over Nigeria, the Group D favorite.
