‘Old Boy’ Club at Work Again

Recent articles concerning the retirement of the county coroner seem to indicate that the “golden handshake” is only available to employees retiring out of departments that are overstaffed. It seemed that the gentleman involved was receiving sympathy for not having an overstaffed department. If that is the situation, I would imagine that this will be one of the few cases that we will ever see in this county where a retiree will suffer such as fate.

What is the “golden handshake?” Does the general population (who pay for such things) know exactly what a golden handshake is, or do they care to know? Is this another process that has been quietly imposed on the taxpayers without their knowledge? If it’s a device to encourage retirement in overstaffed departments, why not just change the bizarre hiring practices that have gone on in the county for as many years as I can remember?

Perhaps the new executive director of the Ventura County Taxpayers Assn. could ask “nice little questions” about this issue.
