From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A woman suspected of driving a car into a group of eight bicyclists, killing one and injuring five, surrendered to authorities, the California Highway Patrol said. Linda Ann Scates, 39, who allegedly sped away after Saturday’s crash, went to a home in Danville on Sunday evening and asked to talk to police, said CHP Officer Greg Cassina. She was to be taken to jail in Martinez and booked on one count of manslaughter and seven counts of felony hit and run, Cassina said. “We’re looking now at the possibility of more than a traffic accident, something more sinister . . . maybe an intentional act on her part,” CHP spokesman C.W. Hubbs said. The suspect was convicted in 1987 of trying to run down three people in Antioch, Hubbs said.
