Bowl Needs Avocados: Avocado growers have been largely unable to harvest during the 13 days of rain, said Robert Verloop, western regional merchandising manager for the California Avocado Commission, which is based in Santa Ana.
He said grocery stores are concerned about a possible shortage for Super Bowl Sunday on Jan. 31, when people are expected to eat lots of guacamole. That is the second-largest day for avocado consumption, Verloop said, right after Cinco de Mayo.
His commission sent an alert to all growers recently, asking them to reassure grocers, who are advertising avocados as a bowl game must. “We are certainly encouraging retailers to continue merchandising the fruit as before,” Verloop said.
But, as the rains continue, concerns about shortages are growing.
Avocados were Orange County’s fourth most valuable crop in 1991, worth $22 million, according to the Orange County Agricultural Commission.
