SIMI VALLEY : City Schedules Free Compost Workshop

Share

The city of Simi Valley will offer its second free back-yard composting workshop Saturday, aimed at reducing the amount of landfill trash by separating and regenerating yard waste.

The first such session was held in November and attracted 65 residents.

Among the topics covered were composting basics, worm composting, how to use mulch, and waste-efficient yard care.

About 20% of the trash generated in Simi Valley is yard waste, and city officials see composting and other recycling efforts as the most effective way to meet state-mandated goals of reducing by 25% the amount of trash brought to the Simi Valley Landfill by 1995.

“If we’re going to meet the goals, yard wastes are going to have to be diverted from going to the landfill,” Simi Valley Mayor Greg Stratton said Monday.

“We’re hoping that, if we can get people to do more of this, it’s like convincing people to car pool. The more you convince (people) to do it, the less you have to force people to do it.”

The composting workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Rancho Tapo Community Park, 3700 Avenida Simi.

Participants are advised to bring a blanket or lawn chair.
