State Support for Colleges
California’s proposed budget for next year includes a very generous $4.3 billion for higher education. Our problems in the universities are not because of lack of reasonable levels of support from the taxpayers, but can be traced to the unwise ways chosen for spending our funds. We support bloated administrations that have little to do with quality education. I suggest that much can be done to reduce our costs if we concentrate on trimming administrative fat instead of increasing tuition, laying off teachers and canceling classes.
