A Van Nuys man surrendered to authorities in connection with the gang-related shooting death of a 16-year-old high school student, Los Angeles police said Wednesday.

Try Chhem, 19, was accompanied by his attorney, James Stroud, when he surrendered Tuesday at the Van Nuys station, said Detective Ed Heissel.

Detectives had an arrest warrant for Chhem on suspicion of fatally shooting Allen Choi of North Hills on New Year’s Eve.

Choi, a student at Granada Hills High School, was with a friend that day at Coldwater Canyon Boulevard and Cantara Street in North Hollywood when Chhem and three other gang members approached, Heissel said.

Chhem shot Choi and then fled with the others, Heissel said. Police are still seeking the other three gang members in connection with the case.

Chhem, on probation for a Juvenile Court conviction for assault with a deadly weapon, was being held without bail on suspicion of murder, Heissel said.
