Jimmy Carson and Paul Ysebaert scored back-to-back goals late in the second period to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-3 comeback victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night at Detroit.

The Red Wings are unbeaten in their last five games (4-0-1) and have trailed in four of those games.

Ron Wilson had given the Blues a 2-1 lead at 7:20 of the second period before the Red Wings went ahead on the goals by Carson at 15:34, while Detroit had a two-man advantage, and Ysebaert at 17:58.

Both teams said the turning point came when Garth Butcher took the second penalty before Carson’s five-on-three goal.

Butcher was called for roughing Dino Ciccarelli in front of the net.

“It was a bad call, a very bad call,” Butcher said. “It was a five-on-four, and I was clearing him from in front of the net.”

Chicago 6, Washington 2--Stephane Matteau had two goals for the first time in two years as the Blackhawks defeated the Capitals for the sixth consecutive time at Chicago Stadium.

Michel Goulet’s goal, at 7:57 of the second period, broke a 2-2 tie.

The Blackhawks remained four points ahead of second-place Detroit in the Norris Division.

Minnesota 7, Ottawa 2--Russ Courtnall scored his third career hat trick, giving him nine goals in his last nine games, and the North Stars won at Bloomington, Minn.

Courtnall also assisted on Bobby Smith’s goal. Mike Modano, Dave Gagner and Trent Klatt added goals for the North Stars, who are 12-0-0 against expansion teams since a 1980 loss to Edmonton.

The Senators, on a six-game losing streak, have dropped their first 23 road games. At 4-43-3, they are on pace to break the modern NHL record for futility. Washington was 8-67-5 in 1974-75.

Boston 5, Philadelphia 4--Dave Reid’s second goal of the game, with 8:43 to play, lifted the Bruins at Philadelphia.

Reid picked up a rebound in the left circle and beat goaltender Tommy Soderstrom.

Hartford 4, San Jose 2--Terry Yake had a goal and an assist as the Whalers won at Hartford to end a five game losing streak.

Hartford, 7-0-0 against expansion teams this season, is 6-30-4 against the rest of the NHL.

Toronto 6, Tampa Bay 1--Mike Krushelnyski scored twice as the Maple Leafs handed the Lightning its seventh consecutive loss in a penalty-plagued game at Tampa.

Five players scored for the Maple Leafs, who won for the fifth time in seven games.

There were 140 penalty minutes assessed, 75 against Tampa Bay and 65 against Toronto.
