A pair of police officers shot and killed a man who confronted them with a handgun Saturday evening at an apartment complex, officials said.

Police identified the man as Sylvan Randall Byrd, 40, who was believed to be a resident of the complex. The body of Byrd, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was taken to Los Alamitos Medical Center, said Lt. Jay Mendez of the Sheriff’s Department, which investigates officer-involved shootings in the city.

Los Alamitos police declined comment on the incident.

Mendez said a pair of uniformed Los Alamitos police officers were sent to an apartment complex in the 3500 block of Howard Avenue about 5:45 p.m. to investigate reports of a disturbance involving some shouting.

When the officers went to an apartment unit, they “saw a man holding a handgun, the officers drew their weapons and fired several times,” Mendez said. Mendez said Byrd ignored repeated orders to drop the gun and it was not clear what prompted the shooting.

Mendez said it was not clear if either of the Los Alamitos officers, whose names were not released, was wounded in the shooting.
