Working Windmill

Share

Having visited many windmills in the Netherlands, may I suggest (“No Smooth Sailing to Find a Windmill that Works,” Dec. 13) to windmill aficionados, that the finest example of a working windmill I have found anywhere is Ellis’ Mill in the city of Lincoln, in Yorkshire, England. Excellent detailed tours are given of this four-sailed, four-floored grain mill, operated by the Lincoln Civic Trust. One can watch wheat and barley, grown nearby, being ground by the large millstones that are turned by giant gear wheels, set into motion by the wind on the sails. Ellis’ Mill is open 2 p.m. to dusk, every second and fourth weekend October to April, and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., every weekend May through September.
