Marshall’s Body to Lie in State at Supreme Court’s Great Hall
The body of retired Justice Thurgood Marshall will lie in state on Wednesday at the Great Hall of the Supreme Court, the court’s public information office announced Monday.
Only once before has a justice’s coffin--that of former Chief Justice Earl Warren--been on view at the court. Warren died in July, 1974.
Funeral services for Marshall, who died Sunday, will be held at the National Cathedral on Thursday.
Marshall, a giant of the country’s civil rights revolution, in 1967 became the country’s first black Supreme Court justice. He retired in 1991.
An outpouring of respect and grief has followed his death. President Clinton Monday ordered all flags at public buildings and grounds flown at half-staff.
“As our nation begins to chart its course for the next century,” a Clinton proclamation said, “it is fitting that we pause to honor and remember the courageous, purposeful life of Thurgood Marshall.”
The court’s marble-columned Great Hall will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The Thursday funeral services will begin at 11 a.m.
A private burial ceremony will be held Friday at Arlington National Cemetery.
