Pasadena : Board Questions Clinton
President Clinton will be getting a letter from the board of education asking him to re-examine his family’s decision to send his daughter, Chelsea, to a private school.
The board Tuesday approved a plan to write a letter to the President asking his support of public education by placing his daughter in the Washington public schools.
The letter will state that the family’s decision to send Chelsea to a private school could be perceived as a vote of “no confidence” in public education.
It will invite the President to visit Pasadena public schools and ask him to use the bully pulpit of the presidency to promote public education.
“It’s like the American Airlines president saying, ‘I fly United,’ ” said Sam Sheets, a former board member who proposed writing the letter.
In other matters, board President Elbie Hickambottom announced the appointment of Bruce Matsui as a deputy superintendent. Matsui, director of Los Angeles County’s California School Leadership Academy, will be the district’s No. 2 official.
