FILLMORE : School District, City Agree to Share Some Facilities

The city of Fillmore and the Fillmore Unified School District are joining forces to streamline community access to their facilities.

The Fillmore City Council voted unanimously at Tuesday’s meeting to enter a cooperative facility-use agreement with the school district.

While school board members have yet to vote on the agreement, City Manager Roy Payne said district approval was only a formality.

The agreement allows the city to schedule and use school facilities for events and programs sponsored by the city.

Fillmore recreation coordinator Bob Buckles will be in charge of scheduling the use of both city and school facilities, officials said.

“This takes the burden off the district for scheduling events for community organizations wanting to use their facilities,” Payne said.

Under the agreement, the school district will have access to such city buildings as the Senior Center and Veterans Memorial Building.

Community organizations and individuals in turn will have access to district playgrounds and gymnasiums for such activities as youth baseball and dances.

The city and school district will meet each year in February to exchange their respective annual use requests for facilities, Buckles said.

“This makes the process a lot easier,” he said. “Neither (agency) can afford to build a new recreation center and (the agreement) allows more use of all facilities throughout the whole community.”
