Making a Comeback: Two Echo Park murals whitewashed by the L.A. City Recreation and Parks Department shortly before Christmas appear on their way to being re-created. The murals, by graffiti artist William (A-One) Gomez and student artist Michael Blasi, won unanimous approval Thursday from the Cultural Affairs Commission, and go before the Recreation and Parks Commission Feb. 8. Although a budget has not been worked out, the parks department has said that it will pay to replace the murals, which were created as part of a Cultural Affairs grant. The works were whitewashed after residents and City Council staff members reportedly complained about them.
