STAGE REVIEW : Sitcom Yucks in ‘Maggie’s Madness’

Nosotros is staging a whimsical comedy about a middle-class Latina divorcee (portrayed by playwright Lina Gallegos), her college-student daughter (Christina Morales) and a charming scoundrel from Mexico who brushes aside the daughter to have an affair with her mom.

Director Marilyn Coleman keeps the action brisk. The lothario, winningly played by Richie Franco, easily steals the show. But the first act, minus the lovable Franco, is flat and uneventful.

TV sitcom is written all over the second act, which, refreshingly, features a Latina with a non-Latino husband and a professional Latino family that lives in a sumptuous home (Stuart R. Baur’s set). In that sense, this non-stereotyped family (with assorted neighborly drop-ins) belongs on TV. “Maggie’s Madness,” Nosotros, 1314 N. Wilton Place, Hollywood. Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m., Sundays, 7 p.m. Ends Feb. 7. $8-$10. (213) 465-4167. Running time: 2 hours.
